Our History

APNO-USA officially began in 2002 as an umbrella organization for the chapters of the organization of Amokwe indigenes in the USA. It was created for the purpose of helping indigenous people in Amokwe, and the people from the surrounding towns and villages in Nigeria to gain access to proper health care.

In line with this objective, APNO-USA had its first fundraising convention in Dallas, Texas back in 2002. The money raised in the convention was to build a cottage hospital known then as Amokwe Healthcare Clinic but now renamed Amokwe Medical Center located at Amokwe Civic Center, Afor Iyi.

In 2003, another fundraising convention was held in New York. At that convention, the organization held its first election in which Dr. Luke Aneke was elected the first President of APNO-USA. A year later, Chief Obi Ene took on the leadership role as the second president of the organization. It was under his administration that the architectural drawing plan of the Amokwe Medical Center was designed.

In December of 2004, Obi Ene’s administration held the groundbreaking ceremony for the Medical center construction. This was attended by various dignitaries in Amokwe. Shortly following this groundbreaking ceremony, the contract for the building of the center was awarded. The construction of the Medical center began in 2005.

In 2008, Chief Eric Aneke took over the leadership from Obi Ene. His leadership continued project. Subsequent conventions were held in order to generate more funds for the proposed hospital. After a series of successful fundraising conventions, the hospital was finally completed and opened in 2011, under the leadership of then-President Chief Eric Aneke. Upon the establishment of the Medical Center, APNO-USA began yearly medical mission program at the Medical Center where free medical services are provided. The organization is planning to increase the medical mission program to more than once a year.

At the convention held in Los Angeles in 2014, Engineer Christian Agu was elected the 4th president of the organization. Engineer Agu’s administration, in addition to the yearly medical mission, renovated and upgraded the Medical center building and installed interlock floor on the ground in front of the Medical Center building. Additionally, Engineer Agu’s administration began building a doctors’ quarter. The quarter was built up to lintel level and stopped due to lack of fund.

In 2019, APNO-USA had another convention and election in which Dr. Ejike Ene was elected the 5th president of the organization.
